The post can still be useful even for those who are not using WordPress as their Content Management System.
Have you recently created your WordPress and can’t wait to start blogging? I know the feeling. In fact, I believe purchasing a hosting plan, registering a domain name and seeing your blog come into existence really does make one feel unstoppable!
Said truth, there’s more to blogging than that and man! It doesn’t get any easier. Anyway, the reason for blogging is to share your stories, knowledge or even experiences with people who you think will have interest in you, right? Great, that brings us to today’s topic.
That’s just how Search Engine Optimization (SEO) comes into play. People (or your target audience, if I may say) will be looking for your content on the search engines. And the only way they will find you is if you present yourself ‘Like, Hey! Check me Out’ on the search engines.
‘Okay, fine Mr. I hear you… I have to present myself but, how do I do that exactly?’ Well, it’s really simple. All you have to do is optimize your blog’s content for search engines.
SEO Basics and Bring Organic Traffic
There are certain things you should know (basics) before you even think about creating and publishing content on your WordPress blog. Knowing all of this will be ideal and will definitely help you in having an optimized blog. The search engines gives preference favor optimized blogs and that means you will get more organic traffic.
I mean, what’s a website without traffic?
A blog without traffic is the same as a vehicle without its important parts. It’s pretty much safe to say that, the reason we create websites is to have people visit them.
If it wasn’t so, you would not be having a website in the first place. Therefore, as a webmaster you will need more visitors on a daily basis, and even have regulars to achieve the goals you may have set.
Anyway, there are various ways one can try to bring traffic to a website. You can bring traffic to your website by creating ad campaign (paid advertising) on social media platforms.
The most used platforms for ad campaigns are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google Adwords.
Paid advertising is the easiest way (if you have money) to drive traffic to your website. However, to keep the visitors coming back (and even turn them into regulars) is the hard part.
Therefore, before you even think of creating your ad campaign, you need to work on your website.
By ‘work on your website‘ I’m referring to:
- Writing informative and optimized content.
- Having enticing and engaging post headlines.
- Using the right long tags (keywords) and
- Installing some useful plugins.
Firstly, I would like to say – you have made the right choice by choosing WordPress as your hosting platform.
WordPress is one of the most easiest, powerful and great website content management system.
Having WordPress as your content management system gives you access to a lot of free themes and plugins.
Okay, that brings us to the plugin we will be talking about on this post, the Yoast SEO plugin. The Yoast SEO will help you write readable posts, choose a focus keyword, edit image alt text and so on.
Writing Engaging Post Titles (Headlines)
This is so important. To attract readers or viewers you need to write eye-catching and engaging post headlines.
Great headlines will tempt a user and invite them to check your posts or articles. Post headlines like Proven ways to make money using a blog are most likely to attract visitors than a headline like Make Money.
Let me recommend the Sharethrough Headline Analyzer to you. This free website will assist you with writing engaging headlines.
The problem about the second headline is that: It doesn’t sound enticing, neither does it reveal much information about the post’s body. Not to mention how lame it may appear to viewers.
You must know, a boring headline will not encourage viewers to click on it. If you are a smooth talker then you may want to use that skill to write better headlines.
The Yoast SEO will also help you write a title and description for search engines. When your write your title(s) and description(s) make sure to include your focus word, call to action text and definitely tempting and inviting text.
Writing Unique and Informative Content for SEO
The common phrase is “Content is King” and indeed it is. I always tell new bloggers not to write for the sake of writing. The common mistake new bloggers (who say they blog for fun) is to write about everything. Sure thing, you won’t run out of things to post when you post about everything.
However, it also doesn’t give you much credibility. It would be like the jack of all trades and master of none so have your own type of content (niche) and stick to it.
Keep your content useful and write short sentences (cut to the chase). As the Yoast SEO says, your sentences should not contain more than twenty words. It also recommends that you have at least a minimum of nine hundred words on your posts. That may be too much for new bloggers but make sure to keep it above three hundred words.
Posts with a lot of words can be (actually, they are) advantageous but avoid the Terms and Conditions type of content.
By that, I mean you should spice things up and add pictures. Not just any pictures though, eye-catching pictures will do (avoid copyrighted pictures at all cost).
To have unique content, you can write articles based on your experience and knowledge. Avoid plagiarism at all costs. Also, remember to write in a simplified language and never use uncommon words.
Adding Text (Focus Keyword/s) for SEO on Alt Text – Images.
By adding text to your images you allow search engines to index them for the keywords you will use.
After uploading your image, don’t leave the title and alt text empty. You can add your website’ URL, post keywords (including your focus keyword) to optimize it for search engines.
Adding Tags on Your Posts for SEO
Your tags should be relevant to the post and what it covers. A minimum of five tags is recommended and longer tags tend to perform much better compared to short tags. Long tag example: How to earn money blogging online and a short tag is something like: Earn money.
The other way to get converting tags is to use the Google search results to find out about the most searched keywords and most asked questions (trends).
You will see what people normally search about on the bottom of the page (this depends on the topic you will be covering). Use the questions or words they use as tags.
